WHAT IS PHYSIOTHERAPY?
Chartered Physiotherapists are movement and exercise specialists and Physiotherapy is the use of specific therapeutic techniques to reduce pain, facilitate movement, improve muscle balance, promote body awareness and enhance performance.
The result is a horse or dog who is able to perform to the best of their ability in a comfortable and balanced manner. This in itself promotes a good quality of life, reduces the risk of injury and may prolong your animal's career.
Chartered Veterinary Physiotherapists are trained human therapists who have undergone two years post graduate training at the Royal Veterinary College in order to treat animals. All Chartered Veterinary Physiotherapists are fully insured and regulated, liaise closely with other professionals and always work with a veterinary referral
(as required by the Veterinary Act 1962 and 1966).
EQUINE PHYSIOTHERAPY
Whether you have a happy hacker, occasional hunter or a high goal polo star, he needs to move correctly. Pain, stiffness, asymmetry, weakness, poor muscle co-ordination and reduced range of movement all affect movement and ultimately performance. A full gait and palpatory assessment identifies all these issues and from this information a treatment plan is formed. All treatment plans and exercises are specific and tailored to your horse and your needs, ensuring you receive an individual service every time.
I believe that treating your horse is the first step to recovery, but this must be complemented by a client programme of specific exercises to build muscle and aid balance and stability. This approach provides a holistic service, ensuring that your horse remains on the right track.
RIDER PERFORMANCE
It’s not only your horse that deserves Physiotherapy. As riders we all pick up injuries however subtle and those habits of the day job can often come back to haunt in the saddle. How many riders understand how the subtle things they do in the saddle affect the way their horse moves?
Collapsing a hip, a slight upper body rotation, stiffness, uneven seat? Sound familiar? We can offer rider assessments either in combination with treatment for your horse or separately. Regardless of your riding experience or ability, we offer a tailored service to highlight and address problem areas using a variety of techniques.
CANINE PHYSIOTHERAPY AND HYDROTHERAPY
Dogs and other small animals can require physiotherapy for many different reasons. Surgery on joints and the spine is common and often these animals need physiotherapy to assist them in returning to their previous level of exercise and fitness. This is especially important with working and performance dogs.
Hydrotherapy can be used as an integral part of your dog’s physiotherapy regime. We can use the water to our advantage, to provide pressure, resistance and can utilise the speed and incline to increase the intensity of the session and target a specific muscle group.
