The art of Physiotherapy is the use of manual therapy, electrotherapy and physical therapy (exercises) to reduce pain and inflammation and restore function through the promotion of the body’s own healing abilities.  Physiotherapy practice is evidence based and compliments good
medical or veterinary care.  It should never be used as a substitute for medical or veterinary treatment.

Rachel has been a Chartered Physiotherapist since 2004, qualifying from The University of the West of England, Bristol.
She has also undertaken further studies at The Royal Veterinary College, London to add the title Veterinary Physiotherapist to her qualifications.

Rachel is based on the border of Surrey & West Sussex, near Gatwick Airport.  Whilst most of her work is based in these counties, this location
gives easy access to the M23, M25 and other major routes in the South-East to run clinics at locations further afield.

Rachel is currently in the process of having her new Pilates4Horses Lunging System manufactured.  The system is completely new
and based upon different exercise principles than the existing lunging systems currently on the market.

It is based upon the exercise principles first developed by Joseph Pilates in the first half of the twentieth century.  His regimes for people are based upon exercises on a mat and exercises using apparatus.  The Pilates4Horses Lunging System uses the principle of using apparatus to make the muscles work harder.  It is based on the body’s need for abdominal control in order to support and protect the central structures, in particular the spine, and allow for better limb control.

The aim of the Pilates4Horses Lunging System is to promote good musculoskeletal health as well as helping to achieve peak performance.
It achieves this by making the horse work their abdominal muscles harder than during standard lunging, normal ridden schooling or even compared to other lunging systems.  By working the abdominal muscles the horse’s topline is encouraged to round, which stretches out the epaxial group of muscles, which in turn maintains good flexibility and circulation in thee tissues.  This rounding also opens up the intervertebral joints of the thoracic and lumbar spine helping to reduce/prevent rubbing of joint surfaces, which is frequently associated with kissing spines.  From a performance point of view, the abdominal muscles will be stronger, enabling the horse to create a better posture/overall outline.  The increased abdominal strength will also enable to horse to support their abdominal contents better, which in turn allows the hind limb to step under more easily and increase the horses potential for propulsion.
