Hill Equestrian Construction Limited is a small family based company specialising in a personal service and the building of long lasting, high specification arenas and gallops, to both professional and private individuals.
I have over 20 years of experience in this field and am more than happy to give help and advice so that your installation can be built right the first time.
ARENA CONSTRUCTION
Due to the noticeable increase in the ferocity of rainfall we have in this country, the old method of blinded stone bases is not really up to the job. This consists of laying MOT Type 1 or road planings and rolling them down tight, sometimes adding dust to the top layer to bind in the stones, then the surface can be laid without a separating layer (membrane or tarmac) most of the flooded arenas I see are built using this method, this is sometimes partially overcome by building the arena with a fall or slope which will help the water run off. The downside of this is the surface will migrate down hill causing the higher side to be constantly thin on the surface. Taking all this into consideration, I offer two base construction options: A Tarmac Base and a Membrane Base.
GALLOP CONSTRUCTION
In conjunction with Parkway , we have built and refurbished gallops for some of the biggest names in racing. These were built using similar specifications as arena bases, the main difference being that they are built into the ground and so require drainage to remove water from the base. Tarmac bases are ideal for these applications, being tough enough to cope should surface become thin and maintenance equipment can be set deep to give heavy going conditions without the fear of tearing a membrane which could become a trip hazard. Most gallops are built on sloping ground and so waxed surfaces are usually used to minimise the migration of the surface.
SURFACES
In my experience, customers usually have a good idea on their likes and dislikes surface wise. Failing that I am always willing to advise on the pros and cons of each surface but you really can’t beat actually looking at surfaces already in use and either myself or Parkway can usually recommend a school in your area with the relevant surface.
I am happy to lay any surface the customer requires, whether it be a waxed surface, sand and rubber, pvc or woodchip – the choice is yours.
FENCING
The fence on your arena is the first thing to be seen and so it is important that it be of high quality and well erected. Our fences are always erected using a laser level for accuracy and posts are concreted into the ground for durability. The customers wishes are paramount but barring any special requests our standard fence consists of tanalised softwood 150mm x 75mm posts with 3 × 87mm x 38mm rails and 2 × 150mm x 38mm kickboards and is set to a finished height of 4’6” unless requested otherwise.
